Movie Review: Europa Report

IMDB, Europa ReportScience-Fiction/Thiller, 90 Minutes, 2013: “Europa Report” on IMDB

If you liked “Gravity” (my review) then you’re a smart, discerning and, if I may say, strikingly attractive individual. You’ll also love “Europa Report”. The movie presents a highly realistic space mission; in this case a multi-year, multi-national mission to Europa, Jupiter’s sixth moon. All our (actual) evidence indicates that Europa is home to massive, warm water-oceans under its geologically active crust of ice. It’s generally understood to be our best legitimate shot of finding extraterrestrial life in the solar system.

Movie Review: The World’s End

IMDB, The World's EndComedy/Sci-Fi, 109 Minutes, 2013: “The World’s End” on IMDB

[Wife and kids are away and I’m catching up on movies.]

Film nerds are likely aware that this film marks the third, or “Green Mint” flavor, of Edgar Wright’s [IMDB] acclaimed, but only tenuously related,  Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. The film stars Simon Pegg [IMDB] as Gary King, a rather sad forty-something that continues to ride the questionable glories of his high-school heydays, and Nick Frost [IMDB] as Andy Knightley, his former best friend who has since cleaned up, straightened out and made something of himself.

Movie Review: The Host

IMDB, The Host [2013]Sci-fi, 125 Minutes, 2013: The Host on IMDB

This really wasn’t such a bad idea but tell me, Stephanie Meyer fans, does every single, blessed thing she writes involve a blank, emotionless girl in a love triangle?  Is it a new genre, like Dub Step or dinosaur porn, that I’ve just been blissfully unaware of?

Movie Review: After Earth

IMDB, After EarthSci-Fi, 100 Minutes, 2013: After Earth on IMDB

This may not actually be as bad as you may have heard but lordy, lordy it ain’t good.  A lot has been said about M. Night Shyamalan’s [IMDB] fall from grace.  I’m not one to kick a man when he’s down but dammit, this guy does not make it easy.

[Minor spoilers follow.  Sorry.]

Movie Review: Oblivion

IMDB, OblivionSci-fi, 124 Minutes, 2013: Oblivion on IMDB

This is a good sci-fi movie.  Tom Cruise [IMDB] is still good enough to make you forget that he’s pants-crapping crazy.  Morgan Freeman [IMDB] is Morgan Freeman.  The effects are gorgeous.  The pacing is effective and the cinematography stunning.

It’s a good movie.  You’ll enjoy it.  Are we clear on that?  Good, because the movie was also really fucking stupid.

RiffTrax Live: Starship Troopers!

RiffTrax Live: Starship Troopers

We’re huge RiffTrax fans here and when they did their first KickStarter campaign back in February we backed them.  Backed them hard!  They were trying to earn enough to Riff “Twilight”.  Apparently, since the movie is still busy printing money like Guttenberg on Meth, there isn’t enough for that.  So they did “Starship Troopers” instead.

Broadcast by Fathom Events to hundreds of theaters (and, for the first time, Canada) this is the fifth live RiffTrax event and the first using a major studio film.  The prior events, “Plan Nine from Outer Space”, “Manos: The Hands of Fate”. “Reefer Madness” and the modern turkey classic, “Birdemic”, were some of the best times we’ve had in a theater and this one didn’t disappoint.

“Starship Troopers” is actually a decent film on its own.  Campy, clichéd and over-the-top, but also fun, well-paced and visually impressive.  I prefer it when the guys riff truly terrible films so I can’t say this was my favorite live event.  It was still worlds better than any of the comedies I’ve seen this year.

RiffTrax never disappoints!

Movie Review: Space Soldiers

IMDB, Space SoldiersSci-fi, 93 Minutes, 2013: Space Soldiers on IMDB

[This is the fifteenth selection in my irregular, “My Wife and Kids are Visiting Relatives and I’m Home Watching Movies” film festival.]

This is one of those super-low-budget “what the…?” movies that you come across sometimes.  At first I couldn’t find any information about it – until I realized that it had been released as both “Space Soldiers” and “Scavengers” (when “Space Scavengers” would probably be best).
